July 2022

Young professionals upbeat
on vacations and weekend travel.

It now looks like a weak phase on the Covid front – though expert opinion cautions us about similar virus outbreaks being part of our lives (something we need to live with.) But right now, we can say happy days are here again – in terms of work, travel, vacations, and entertainment.

So we reached out to some young vacation seekers to check on their vacation plans. These are people who have played safe during the pandemic, and have been waiting for the right time to pack their bags.

This young demographic is useful to us – and extremely relevant, in terms of readiness to travel. This is the segment that is wired to take breaks - over long weekends, and sometimes on a longer annual vacation.

Here’s what some of them had to say.

Mallika Kumar – IT consultant

When I see the distinct possibility of a vacation happening, it’s like coming up for air. That’s what it feels like these days. At this point we are primed to go, and have a clear confirmation on our bookings.

When we received a confirmation mail from the resort, I almost pinched myself to make sure our plans were finally resulting in the break we were waiting for.

Like I said the last time, I now look at things like that with renewed respect and consideration. It’s only when something is taken away from you, do you actually feel the difference.

Veena Bhaskaran – interior designer

If you visit me at office, you will see something interesting on my message board - a pull out of a calendar month where I have highlighted our vacation week. I also have an activity planner to ensure that we devote enough time to make things happen.

This time, we’re increasing the numbers to include two sets of parents (my parents and my husband’s parents) who seem delighted to be able to spend some time with us, and the kids.

The entire family has taken the recommended two-dose vaccine shots, as well as the booster. And we’re now eagerly looking forward to winging our way to our favorite resort location. This time, we are pulling out all the stops.

Gauri Srinivasan – investment advisor

I’m an investment advisor, and in my line of work we plan early, and wait for something magical to happen. Our upcoming vacation seems just like that. We’ve made our plans in time, and are now doing a countdown towards our long-awaited break.

To play safe I track health update columns just the way I scan investment markets on the business pages. And I do this diligently, without missing out on the smallest headlines.

Right now I am looking at an interactive chart on my laptop that tells me about the probability of a vacation happening – all things being considered. And I think my vacation predictions are coming true. That’s a good return on time spent planning our holiday.

Vinod Prabhu – banking professional

Looking back at the last two years I almost feel like our vacation has been placed in a fixed deposit, with the unused days / weeks, adding to our tally. It looks like a happy dashboard giving you something exciting to look forward to. (Many happy returns to our favorite resort.)

I had a long chat with our regional manager this morning to discuss my holiday plans - and going by the support I had given my team during the pandemic, he said that my leave application would be approved without any delay.

Not long after that, I heard him chat with his wife about the possibility of them going on vacation. But he’ll have to wait till I get back from mine.

At the time of publishing this article, it does seem like the world of travel is slowly gearing up for a revival. Though we are at the end of July, you can still make your plans - however big or small they might be.

The world of travel needs people to look ahead with hope, optimism and a sense of adventure. We need people to be looking at freeing their calendars once again.

Guess it’s time to start packing your bags.
