For this interview, we are in conversation with Dhanraj Mulki on sustainability and environmental initiatives at Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Limited (MHRIL). This feature has brief extracts from that conversation, and here’s our first question to him.

At MHRIL, how do you visualize the ecological balance at different project locations?

At MHRIL, we are deeply committed to adopting responsible business practices and implementing various initiatives. These include measuring the carbon footprint, conserving biodiversity, promoting energy conservation, utilizing renewable sources, practicing water conservation, and waste recycling. These green initiatives align with the company's larger mission of fostering "Good Living, Happy Families."

Keeping this mission in mind what are MHRIL’s long-term goals?

Mahindra Holidays is committed to carbon neutrality by 2040 - making it India’s first hospitality company in India that has signed both RE100 and EP100 - global campaigns led by The Climate Group aiming to achieve 100% renewable energy usage by 2050, and double energy productivity by 2030.

The company has also embraced the Science Based Target Initiative, which requires a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to limit global temperature rise below two degrees Celsius. Additionally, Mahindra Holidays has undertaken the EP100 cooling challenge by monitoring air conditioning system efficiency and implementing energy-efficient solutions.

Could you share recent examples of initiatives in renewable energy, water management, and waste recycling?

In recent years, Mahindra Holidays has implemented a range of initiatives focused on renewable energy, energy conservation, water preservation, waste recycling, and biodiversity. One notable accomplishment is the launch of the 'Zero Waste to Landfill' (ZWL) program in 2019-20, with the Virajpet resort becoming the first ZWL-certified resort in India. Currently, ten of our resorts are ZWL-certified, with plans to extend it to many more in the future.

The company has also made significant strides in adopting eco-friendly practices such as the installation of organic waste converters, vermin-compost systems, and biogas facilities across multiple resorts.

How many of your resorts have obtained a Platinum Green Building Certification?

Eleven of Mahindra Holidays resorts, including those in Ashtamudi, Poovar, Emerald Palms, Varca, Puducherry, Naldehra, Kandaghat, Kanha, Mussoorie, Jaisalmer, and Binsar, have obtained the 'Platinum' green building certification (IGBC-CII), exemplifying our dedication to sustainability. EVs and EV charging stations within resorts are another ongoing project.
